When You Need to Look for Help

Watch for signs that a senior needs assistance at home

Living at home becomes more difficult as we age. Despite challenges, most seniors prefer to stay at home as long as possible. However, family members are often the first to notice something amiss. A senior's daily functioning can be assessed in order to determine the level of care that he or she needs. If the senior does not have the ability to take care for themselves in his or her own home, he or she may need in-home care. To determine the level of care your loved one requires and to understand the level of care you need, complete a needs assessment before deciding how your aging loved one will be cared for.

Why you should consider hiring in-home care

There are professional caregivers who can provide respite for family caregivers. It is an important source of support for the family to include in- home care providers in their care team so they can continue to reside in their own house for as long as possible as their loved one gets older. With the help of aides, family members are able to feel at ease knowing that their elderly loved ones' care needs are met.

Agency vs. Direct-hire caregivers

Caretakers who are employed directly by the family are called direct-hire caregivers. Independent contractors are used by families because they are able to save money by doing so. The benefit of having more affordable health care is very attractive. If you hire a private caregiver, you will also need to pay taxes on the wages that they make. It is important to note that caregivers employed by a licensed home care agency are governed by the state's regulations and they are insured by the agency that they work for. Using an agency to provide caregivers may be more expensive, but families who wish to offload the day-to-day responsibilities of managing care to an agency may find it worthwhile. Dealing with background checks, employment taxes, daily scheduling, and finding back-up providers are all mitigated by hiring an agency.

Available Services

Assisting with basic activities of daily living like dressing, bathing, meal preparation, and cleaning is part of personal home care. Providing non-medical, non-skilled care at home is called companion care or homemaker care. Care companions provide assistance at home, keeping seniors safe when they need it most. Home health care is not the same as medical care. You may need a doctor's prescription in order to receive home health services from healthcare professionals, such as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and physical, occupational, and speech-language therapists. Care at home can be grouped into two categories, clinical and skilled care. An example of home health care is a short-term rehabilitation program following a hospital stay. Among the many things that are included in home health care are things such as physical therapy and wound care. A home health aide may be able to administer some skilled home care services under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Caring for People With Declining Mental Health

It is important to establish a care plan that supports the client as well as provides respite to family caregivers as an individual experiences the progressive decline of Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Many home care agencies offer dementia care services. When comparing home care agencies, consider if they have specialized training in managing the behaviors associated with dementia.

Care at Home Payment Options

You can expect the cost of in-home care to be different depending on where you live. Complete a care assessment in order to determine the number of hours of care you will need. As a general rule, home service agencies charge based on the number of hours they provide care at a fixed price. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the average price for home care provided by a personal care assistant, companion or home health aide in the US is $23 per hour, while skilled nursing in the home can cost as much as $87 per hour.

Medicare coverage is based on the type of services that are provided. Original Medicare covers the cost of in-home health care that is ordered by a physician on a short-term basis. A Medicare-certified provider can provide eligible services to Medicare beneficiaries. Unless the need for in-home skilled medical care is part of the scope of services, none of the personal care services will be covered. If you would like to know more about home care services that are covered by Medicare, you can use the eligibility tool found on the Medicare.gov website.

State-funded Medicaid

The eligibility requirements and benefits are not the same in every state. In order to determine if you qualify for home care benefits specific to your state, you should do some research. It is true that all 50 states have some kind of program that pays for home care for the elderly, however, the amount of the benefit varies depending on which type of Medicaid program the senior is enrolled in. By researching both the Medicaid State Plan as well as the Medicaid Waiver program in your state, you can learn more about Medicaid eligibility for home care benefits.
